Connecting iCloud

How to add an iCloud (Apple) mailbox to Saymail, and why it needs an app-specific password rather than your Apple ID password.

iCloud Mail is a standard IMAP mailbox, so Saymail connects to it on every platform - Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iPhone. Pick iCloud in the provider picker and Saymail fills in Apple’s servers for you.

There is one thing you have to do yourself, and it is the reason most people get stuck: iCloud will not accept your Apple ID password. You need an app-specific password.

Creating an app-specific password

Apple does not let apps other than its own sign in with your Apple ID password. Instead you create a one-off password that works only for Saymail. It takes about two minutes.

  1. Sign in at appleid.apple.com.
  2. Go to Sign-In and Security, then App-Specific Passwords.
  3. Choose Generate an app-specific password, name it “Saymail”, and copy the 16-character password Apple shows you. It looks like abcd-efgh-ijkl-mnop.
  4. Paste it into the password field in Saymail and connect.

Can’t find App-Specific Passwords? Apple hides that section until two-factor authentication is switched on for your Apple ID. Turn on two-factor authentication first, then the section appears.

You can revoke the password from the same page at any time. Revoking it disconnects Saymail and nothing else - your Apple ID and every other app are unaffected.

Adding the account

  1. Open the Email Accounts panel (desktop) or Settings → Add account (Android, iPhone).
  2. Pick iCloud.
  3. Enter your iCloud address and the app-specific password.
  4. Choose how far back to download mail, and connect.

Saymail verifies the connection before saving, so if the password is wrong you find out immediately rather than after a failed sync.

Server settings

Saymail fills these in for you. You only need them if you are configuring the account by hand, or if your network blocks one of the standard ports - both desktop and mobile keep the fields editable under Advanced settings.

Server Port Encryption
Incoming (IMAP) imap.mail.me.com 993 TLS
Outgoing (SMTP) smtp.mail.me.com 587 STARTTLS

Your username is your full iCloud address, including the @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com part.

If your network blocks port 587, try SMTP on port 465 with TLS instead.

Custom domains

If you use an iCloud+ custom domain, your address does not end in @icloud.com, but the mailbox still lives on Apple’s servers and the settings above still apply. Pick iCloud rather than IMAP/SMTP, and sign in with your full custom-domain address.

Troubleshooting

“iCloud rejected this password.” You almost certainly entered your Apple ID password. Go back and create an app-specific password using the steps above.

The app-specific password stopped working. App-specific passwords are revoked automatically when you change your Apple ID password. Create a new one and update the account in Saymail.

Mail arrives but sending fails. This is usually the SMTP port. Open Advanced settings on the account and try port 465 with TLS instead of 587.

What Saymail does with the mailbox

Nothing specific to Apple. iCloud accounts sync, get classified, and are searched exactly like any other account - see Email accounts for how signatures, profiles, and multiple accounts work.
